Arbitration is one of the most successful alternative dispute redressal mechanisms in today’s judicial system. It is voluntary in nature wherein the concerned parties decide in advance to settle the dispute through arbitration only. The process of arbitration involves the hearing and determination of a dispute by an impartial authority approved by both parties. Arbitration ends with an award that is equivalent to a judgement in a normal civil case. Once the ruling has been served on the parties, it has a legal consequence and is enforceable after a stipulated time period. The decision taken by the arbitrator is executory in nature, which means that if needed it can be enforced by the courts.

The same procedure is followed during arbitration as is followed in the court of law like disclosure of documents, admission of evidence etc. However, no cross-examination or hearing on oath is carried out.
